Understanding Autism

 Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that shapes how a person communicates, processes information, forms relationships and experiences the world. It is not one single presentation. Every autistic child has their own strengths, needs and ways of thinking. This individuality is at the heart of how we work.


Our practice uses a neurodiversity affirming and strengths-based framework. We do not approach autism as something to be fixed or corrected. Instead, we support young people to understand their own brain, build confidence, and develop practical tools that help them move through daily life more comfortably.


Both Max and Tim have extensive experience supporting autistic children and adolescents in clinical, school and community settings. Sessions are tailored to each young person’s sensory profile, developmental stage and communication style.

Our Approach

 Autistic young people benefit from support that is predictable, flexible and responsive. We take time to understand the child in front of us so that sessions feel safe, engaging and meaningful.

We consider sensory needs, regulation patterns, learning styles and personal interests when planning therapy. This helps the child feel understood and reduces pressure, which is essential for genuine growth. Our team also works collaboratively with families and schools. Clear communication across environments creates consistency, and consistency helps autistic children thrive.


How We Support Autistic Children and Teens

Social and Emotional Development

 Many autistic young people want connection but may feel unsure about how to navigate social expectations. We help them understand their internal cues, recognise emotions and communicate their needs more confidently. Sessions also include opportunities to practise interpreting social situations, managing misunderstandings and building healthy friendships.

Communication Support

Whether a child uses spoken language, gestures, visuals or AAC, we adapt therapy to match their strengths. We use modelling, visual supports and structured conversational frameworks to improve clarity and reduce frustration. Our focus is on functional communication so the child is able to express themselves in ways that feel natural and effective. 

Emotion Regulation

We help children understand what dysregulation looks and feels like for them. This might include noticing early body signals, identifying triggers or learning how different environments affect their energy and focus. We build a personalised toolkit that can include sensory supports, CBT strategies, movement breaks, step-by-step routines or ACT-based approaches.


The goal is to help young people feel more in control of their internal experience.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Our mindfulness-based therapy sessions help clients develop a more mindful and compassionate relationship with themselves and others. We utilize mindfulness-based techniques to help clients reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and cultivate greater self-awareness and acceptance.

Behaviour Support

Behaviour is communication. Sometimes it reflects overwhelm, confusion, sensory overload or a skill gap. We work with families to understand the meaning behind behaviours rather than focusing on surface-level compliance. Our behaviour support is gentle, practical and informed by evidence. We aim to build safety, connection and predictability before introducing new skills. 

Life Skills and Independence

Many autistic children benefit from structured support around planning, organisation and day-to-day routines. We work on executive functioning skills such as time management, flexible thinking, problem solving and independence with tasks. These skills support confidence at home, school and in the community.


Support for Parents and Caregivers

Parenting a neurodivergent child can feel overwhelming at times. We offer clear guidance, reassurance and practical strategies that fit the realities of family life. Parents often tell us they appreciate having a space where they feel understood without judgement.


We can help with understanding behaviour patterns, responding to meltdowns, creating predictable routines, navigating school communication and adjusting expectations in a way that feels supportive rather than restrictive. Our goal is to help families feel capable and informed.


Collaboration With Schools

We frequently work with teachers, learning support staff and wellbeing teams to ensure the child is understood and supported across environments. This can include recommendations for classroom adjustments, sensory strategies, communication supports and transition plans. When everyone is on the same page, the young person experiences less stress and more success.


Group Programs - Interest Dependent

We facilitate structured social and emotional development groups designed specifically for autistic children and teens. These include LEGO Based Therapy, the We Thinkers program and a range of school holiday groups. Each group provides a safe environment to practise social interaction, build confidence and enjoy shared activities with peers.
